How many visits do you currently get?
First question - do you know how many views you are currently getting? On your Flickr Photostream page, you should be able to see how many Photostream vists you have had. (It will be written in grey next to the number of pictures you have uploaded). This is a great first indication on your visits but its not the full picture.
On your Photostream, click through on the Popular link and then choose Views. You should now see a list of every picture in your Photostream in order of views. If your a Pro account users (and you should consider it if you want to get the best out of Flickr), also go to FlickrStats to get the full low down on everything from number of views to the sources of each visit.
Now that you know the metrics to look out for, here are a few of the tips I've picked over the past few months. Try them out, and let me know any others that you come across.
Top 10 Tips for increasing your Flickr visits
- Take pictures that people want to see
- Comment on other Flickr users images
- Join Groups
There are tons of different Group's on Flickr. Experimentation is the best way to find a Group that's interests you. When I uploaded this picture of Stonehenge I searched for Group's that included the keywords "Stonehenge", spotted that English Heritige was one of the most relevant Group's for that keyword, joined the group and added to it. Easy.
- Tag your pictures
- Make contacts
You can add me as a contact here, if you like.
- Message people
- Allow others to Blog your photos
- Get Explored
- Pick your subjects
- Be active
Most importantly, have fun - Flickr can be surprisingly addictive if you choose to let it take a grip over your life!

Good advice, except for the Explore part. Some of my best pics have never made it, but some of my silliest, not very well taken pics of toys have. There is no rhyme or reason.
ReplyDeleteI've seen pics in Explore that are wonderful and others that have me scratching my head. I've seen pics that are of family members and pics that are of scantily clad women (why those are there is kinda obvious).
You can't do much if anything to get into Explore. It either happens or it doesn't. ;)
Thanks for your comment. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, if you do get into explore, your views rocket up. Or at least mine have.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to do an explore blog soon but I know what you mean about its "unpredictable" selection process.
That's one of the oddities of Explore. Actually, there are many oddities.
ReplyDeleteAnd oddly enough, some of my pics (3 or 4) have supposedly been in Explore every time I check, which is daily, for well over a year, yet they haven't shown more views for most of that time, nor more comments or more faves. Why they still come up in Scout as being in Explore is beyond me.
Some of my pics in Explore aren't very good, but they're toy shots and those are popular. And why my pic of a piece of stone paved ground made Explore is a puzzle.
You can't control what makes Explore. I've given up trying to figure it out. So, out of my control, not something I think about when it comes to getting views. I'd rather stick with trying things I can actually do. :)
Good stuff Doug, I will drop by on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteExplore is a fun mystery to unravel. Clues here and there, some solid info here and there and yet things happen that throw me right off the trail again.
Regards,
Mark
